Veganism is on the rise, which means there is an increase in demand for vegan wines. If this lifestyle is new to you, it simply means a decrease in animal usage due to concerns with animal welfare, climate impact, and their own health. You may think, wine comes from grapes, so it must all be vegan, right? But that isn't necessarily the case. Whether you are a long time vegan or just trying to learn about the lifestyle, there are a few things you should know when selecting a vegan wine.
What makes wine vegan?
Wine is made from grapes and yeast but can only sometimes be consider vegan. It may come as a surprise that not all wines are 100% vegan, due to some products in the fining process being animal-derived. The fining process involves removing impurities from the wine. Examples of this include egg whites or casein, a protein found in milk. These products are used to remove small particles of sediment in wine that can’t be removed by filtration.
There are other methods to filter your wine. Vegan wines are made without the use of animal products to filter out unwanted particles. Without the use of animal products, you can let the particles sink to the bottom of the wine instead.
How do you know if your bottle is vegan-friendly?
- Check for “Unfined” or “Unfiltered” on the label
- Look for a “certified vegan” label
- Check for animal-derived ingredients in the wine
- Do a Google search
- Check the producer's website
