Where to Watch the Leaves Dance in NEPA
1. Ricketts Glen State Park
A must-see in the fall, Ricketts Glen is home to 22 stunning waterfalls, each framed by the glowing hues of autumn. With over 13,000 acres of forest, it's a feast for the eyes. A hike along the Falls Trail will lead you through a wonderland of colors, making it easy to lose track of time. Bring a picnic, and don't forget to pack a bottle of wine to enjoy at the base of a waterfall.
2. Endless Mountains
The name says it all. With rolling hills blanketed in fall foliage, the Endless Mountains are perfect for a scenic drive. Make your way along Route 6, stopping at small towns for cozy shops and seasonal bites. We recommend pulling over at World’s End State Park or the Wyalusing Rocks Overlook for views that go on forever. Finish your drive with a visit to our Grovedale tasting room – because nothing pairs better with a day of leaf-gazing than a glass of our Riesling.
3. Lackawanna State Park
For those who want a bit of everything – hiking, biking, and even boating – Lackawanna State Park offers it all, wrapped in the beauty of fall colors. Rent a kayak for a peaceful paddle on the lake, or hike one of the trails that wind through the woods.
4. Promised Land State Park
Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, Promised Land State Park is a gem, offering scenic views and the serenity of nature. The forests here explode with color in the fall, making the park’s easy-to-moderate trails a great option for a leisurely hike. Pack a lunch and and be sure to include a bottle of wine. A perfect combo to keep you warm with good vibes as you explore.
A Sweet Fall Treat: Wine-Poached Pears Recipe
After a day of exploring NEPA’s stunning fall landscapes, why not bring the cozy vibes home with a delicious, easy-to-make dessert? These Wine-Poached Pears are a fall favorite, combining the delicate sweetness of pears with the richness of Grovedale Reserve Riesling. It's an elegant dessert that tastes like autumn in every bite.
Wine-Poached Pears with Riesling
Ingredients:
- 4 ripe but firm pears (Bosc or Anjou work great), peeled and cored
- 1 bottle of Riesling
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar (adjust for sweetness preference)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3-4 whole cloves
- 1 vanilla bean, split (or 1 tsp vanilla extract)
- Zest of 1 orange (optional for extra citrusy flavor)
- Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions:
-
Create the poaching liquid: In a large pot, combine the Riesling, water, sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, vanilla bean (or extract), and orange zest. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
-
Poach the pears: Gently add the pears to the poaching liquid. Cover and let them simmer over low heat for 20-30 minutes until they’re tender but still hold their shape. You’ll know they’re done when a fork easily pierces the pear.
-
Reduce the syrup: Remove the pears from the pot and continue to simmer the poaching liquid for about 10 minutes, or until it thickens into a syrup.
-
Serve: Plate the pears warm or at room temperature, drizzling the Riesling syrup over the top. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an indulgent fall treat.
